Open source
Self-host. Or let us run it.
SwiftFS Core, the S3 API and storage engine behind SwiftFS Cloud, will be published as open source. Until then, SwiftFS Cloud runs it for you.
The source is not published yet
S&S Labs will publish SwiftFS Core's source together with its license and contribution guidelines. This page will link to it then.
Two ways to run SwiftFS
| Aspect | Self-hosted SwiftFS | SwiftFS Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | You, on your servers or cloud | S&S Labs |
| What you need | A Linux server, PostgreSQL 15 or later, and a filesystem with working fsync | A browser |
| S3 API | The same | The same |
| Accounts and access keys | The swiftfs admin command line | Organizations, roles and invitations in the web console |
| Usage records | Exact, per account, through the usage API and swiftfs admin usage | The same records, priced and invoiced monthly |
| Upgrades and monitoring | Yours: Prometheus metrics, health checks, swiftfs admin status | Done for you |
| Cost | Your infrastructure | Pay as you go |
What's in the core
One codebase, two products. Everything storage-related is in SwiftFS Core; SwiftFS Cloud adds the service around it.
SwiftFS Core
- The S3 API: Signature Version 4, presigned URLs, and the payload signing modes AWS SDKs use
- The storage engine: verified writes, multipart uploads without copies, a scrubber that re-reads stored data
- Accounts, access keys with scopes, bucket policies, CORS, quotas and rate limits
- Exact usage records: storage by the byte-second, requests and data out
- The swiftfs command line, Prometheus metrics, health checks, a container image
SwiftFS Cloud adds
- Organizations, members, roles and invitations
- The web console: buckets, an object browser, access keys, usage charts
- Pricing, monthly invoices, card, mobile-money and transfer payments
- Operations by S&S Labs
Why open source
Storage is infrastructure you depend on for years. You should be able to read how it keeps your data, run it where your data has to live, and leave without rewriting anything. SwiftFS speaks the S3 API for that reason, and its core is meant to be open for the same one.
S&S Labs earns its living by operating SwiftFS Cloud well, not by locking the storage engine away.
